Biography
He started painting very early, around the age of fifteen. Sent to the front in Libya, he returned to Lucca in 1941 and learned the essential elements, continuing to paint during the clandestine period until the Liberation. After the war, he met the writer Enrico Pea and, through him, came into contact with artists such as Carlo Carrà, Raffaele De Grada, and Ernesto Treccani, who organized his first major solo exhibition in Milan. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad, and the most important Italian critics have written about him and his works. His pieces are part of many Italian and international collections.
Politically engaged, he was secretary of the Lucca provincial federation of the Italian Communist Party. He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1958 as a member of the PCI, serving one legislative term in Montecitorio. After his parliamentary commitment ended, he abandoned political activism to focus on art. In 1963, the Viareggio Prize organized an exhibition for him.
Married to Anna, from whom he was widowed in 1976, he had six children. He died in 2004 at the age of 81.
