The Estate
Schloss Lieser is one of the Mosel’s most historic and prestigious estates, housed in a Neo-Renaissance castle built in 1884. After decades of decline, Thomas Haag took over in 1992 and purchased the estate in 1997, transforming it into a world-class winery. Today, Schloss Lieser is a proud member of the VDP, Germany’s elite association of top wine estates, and holds the highest accolades including Eichelmann’s 5-star rating and Feinschmecker’s top classification. Haag was named Winemaker of the Year by Gault Millau in 2015 and Falstaff in 2021.
Historical Significance of the Vineyard
Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr is one of the Mosel’s most celebrated sites, with viticulture dating back to Roman times. A Roman wine press was discovered at its base, proving its ancient heritage. The name “Juffer” originated around 1790 when three daughters of a local aristocrat remained unmarried and devoted themselves to the vineyard; “Juffer” means maiden in the local dialect. The Sonnenuhr (sundial) was installed in the 19th century to optimize vineyard work. The slope reaches up to 80 percent gradient, faces pure south, and consists of blue Devonian slate with iron-rich elements, creating wines of unmatched finesse and longevity. Thomas Jefferson praised Brauneberg wines as his favorite during his European travels in the 1780s.
The Vintage
2010 is considered an immortal vintage for Mosel Riesling. Cool conditions and very low yields created Trockenbeerenauslese of monumental concentration and thrilling acidity. These wines combine opulent sweetness with crystalline freshness, ensuring decades—if not generations—of life.
Wine Profile
Deep golden color with aromas of honey, candied citrus, tropical fruit, and smoky slate minerality. The palate is viscous yet vibrant, with layers of exotic fruit, caramelized notes, and botrytis complexity balanced by electrifying acidity. A wine of immense depth and precision.
Awards and Critic Ratings
The 2010 Schloss Lieser Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr TBA Goldkapsel is rated around 95 points by Mosel Fine Wines and other leading critics, praised for its incredible balance of sweetness and acidity, layered tropical fruit, honey, and mineral complexity. Comparable TBAs from this vineyard and vintage have scored between 94 and 97 points, confirming its world-class status.
