This sculptural Shino ceramic flower vase is the work of Nakashima Ichiyō (中島一耀), a prominent Japanese ceramic artist born in 1949 (Showa 24) in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture. This piece features an organically distorted form with hand-built asymmetry and faceted surfaces. The soft pink and milky white glaze creates a striking surface punctuated by pinholes and natural crackling, a signature of Shino ware. The unglazed base displays the artist’s carved signature, and the vase is accompanied by its original tomobako (wooden storage box), cloth, and artist biography certificate.

He opened his kiln in 1975 and has since developed a reputation for his expressive Shino ceramic works. He has held numerous solo exhibitions, including at the Kyoto Nomura Museum of Art and various Mitsukoshi department stores.
He has received awards at the Japan Tea and Flower Ceramic Art Exhibition and has been selected for exhibitions such as the Issuikai and Gifu Prefectural Art Exhibitions. His sculptural approach to ceramics, rooted in tradition but forward-looking in form, has won acclaim for bridging function and artistry.
