Artist Profile
Yamada Kazu (山田和, born 1954) is a highly respected contemporary Japanese ceramic artist specializing in modern interpretations of traditional Japanese pottery styles, particularly Shino and Oribe wares. Born into a renowned family of potters in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, he is the son of Yamada Kenkichi, a celebrated Nitten exhibitor, and nephew of Yamada Jozan, who was designated a Living National Treasure in 1998.
After graduating from Osaka University of Arts in 1976, where he studied under the influential avant-garde ceramicist Suzuki Osamu, Yamada established his first kiln in Echizen. His most significant mentor was the legendary Kato Tokuro (1897-1985), who devoted his life to reviving and modernizing Momoyama period ceramics. Under Kato's guidance until 1985, Yamada developed his distinctive approach of honoring tradition while creating bold contemporary expressions.
Yamada's work is characterized by his mastery of multiple traditional styles including Shino, Oribe, and Seto wares, each reimagined with modern sensibility. His Shino pieces are particularly noted for their rich, fluid glazes with warm reddish-browns or bold white surfaces with striking iron decorations. In 1988, he expanded his practice internationally, building a kiln in Germany and participating in documentary film projects.
His achievements have earned him representation in major museums worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, where his Enbu Shino and Oribe tea wares are part of the permanent collection. He continues to exhibit regularly in Japan and internationally, maintaining studios and working kilns that produce works of exceptional quality and artistic vision.
