DESCRIPTION:
This is a handcrafted ceramic vase by acclaimed Japanese artist Taishō Maeda (前田泰昭) of the renowned Taimei Kiln (泰明窯) in Arita, Saga Prefecture.
The vase showcases a dynamic blue and white sometsuke-style (染付) glaze representing whirling tidal currents (uzushio / 渦潮). The swirling brushstrokes, accentuated by subtle textural variations and glistening surface, evoke the natural motion of water. The globular form and narrow mouth highlight the flow of the decoration, capturing a bold, modern interpretation of a traditional Japanese aesthetic.
On the base is the artist’s kiln mark (泰) incised by hand, confirming authenticity.

前田泰昭 Maeda Taishō is a distinguished ceramic artist based in Arita Town, Saga Prefecture. He leads the Taimei Kiln (泰明窯), specializing in Arita porcelain vases, tableware, and fine art pieces. While rooted in the traditions of Arita ware, Maeda is acclaimed for his research and innovation in glazes—especially copper-red (tensha) and kiln-transformation (yōhen) glazes. His works are noted for their vibrant color and spatial expressiveness inspired by nature.
Highlights of his career include exhibitions at the British Museum’s Saga Ceramics Exhibition in 2000 and the Arita Ceramic Exhibition in Germany in 2004. He was honored in 2005 as a Cultural Contributor by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and in 2017 he became a Special Member of Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition). His pieces are crafted entirely by hand, with a strong following for his vases, sake cups, and tea bowls.
