Artist biography
Tomás Sanclement Hernández (1930-1998) was a Spanish painter specializing in still lifes, renowned for his mastery of light and his refined realist technique. He was born in 1930 in Valencia, into a family of ceramic artisans. From a young age, he displayed a special sensitivity to color and composition, influenced by the artistic atmosphere of his hometown.
After training at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts, where he was a student of Genaro Lahuerta and Pedro de Valencia, Sanclement developed a personal style that combined academic rigor with an intimate and quiet atmosphere. His early works, dating from the 1950s, show a clear influence of the Spanish Baroque, especially Zurbarán and Antonio de Pereda, although later he adopted a more refined language, closer to contemporary realism.
During the 1960s and 70s, he exhibited regularly in galleries in Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona, receiving a warm reception from critics. His preferred subjects were still lifes of fruit, kitchen utensils, and flowers, rendered with almost photographic precision, yet always imbued with a meditative serenity.
From the 1980s onwards, Sanclement also dedicated himself to teaching art, giving courses in oil painting and drawing in his own studio. He died in 1998 in Valencia, leaving behind a relatively small but highly valued body of work among private collectors and gallery owners specializing in 20th-century realist painting.
