Description from the seller
Alfred Wäspi (1943–2022)
Figure in the Night, 1987
oil on canvas
Dimensions: 160 cm height × 139 cm width
Signed and dated on the back of the canvas: 'A.W. 87'.
With the original museum and provenance label from the Sønderjyllands Kunstmuseum, Tønder (Denmark), on the reverse wedge strip.
This large-scale work is classified as Magical Realism and combines precise, reduced figuration with a silent, dreamlike atmosphere. The reclining figure appears physically present, yet subtly detached from the real context. The subdued color palette, clear transitions, and concentrated pictorial space create a timeless, meditative mood.
The painting was exhibited in 1990 at the Sønderjyllands Kunstmuseum in Tønder (now Museum Sønderjylland – Kunstmuseet i Tønder, Denmark). On the reverse side of the wedge strip, there is the original museum label with journal number, artist information, and the reference 'VSK 90,' which clearly documents the institutional exhibition.
The atmospheric depth, the calm composition, and the psychological tension make this work a characteristic example of Wäspi's figurative painting of the late 1980s. The extraordinary large format gives the image a strong spatial presence and emphasizes its significance within the artist's overall body of work.
