【Product details】
This Meiji 28 (1895) triptych, titled 我第二軍威海衛砲台占領之図 (Capture of Weihaiwei Fortress by the Second Army), is by the artist 中澤年章 (Nakazawa Toshiaki, 1864–1921). The work vividly depicts a decisive moment of the First Sino-Japanese War, when the Japanese Second Army stormed and seized the fortress of Weihaiwei. Soldiers raise the Rising Sun flag in victory, driving back the defending forces amidst fierce combat. The fortress walls, snow-covered terrain, and the Japanese fleet visible offshore convey both the strategic importance and the harsh winter conditions of the battle.
Weihaiwei was captured in early 1895, marking a turning point in the war and contributing to the collapse of the Qing dynasty’s Beiyang Fleet. This scene captures the intensity and triumph of that pivotal campaign.
Nakazawa Toshiaki was a Meiji-era ukiyo-e artist and painter who studied under the renowned Utagawa-school master Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. As Yoshitoshi’s live-in pupil for over six years, he produced more than twenty woodblock print designs during that period, many depicting contemporary historical events.
The triptych shows signs of age, including foxing, a faint old smell, small holes, creases, and folded corners. Please refer to the photos for a detailed condition assessment.
Dimensions of a print: approx. H 37 cm W 25.2 cm
