This original Meiji 27 (1894) oban triptych (three-sheet woodblock print) by Ozaki Toshitane (尾崎年種; active c.1882–1897), a pupil of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (月岡芳年の門人), depicts Japanese troops capturing the Golden Hill (Ogonzan) fortress at Port Arthur (Ryojunko) during the First Sino-Japanese War. The dramatic composition shows soldiers storming the gun emplacements on the Liaodong Peninsula, a key episode in the fall of Port Arthur in late 1894.
This design is also held in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where it is catalogued under the title “Our Troops Occupy the Fortress at Huangjinshan in the Battle of Lüshunkou.”
The print employs urushi-e (lacquer-picture) effects on the black areas of uniforms, shoes, and hats. As seen in some Meiji impressions, the glossy effect adds depth despite minor printing imperfections. Ozaki’s work typifies news-like Meiji war prints, combining vivid colour with energetic, reportage-style action.
All three sheets each have one small hole at a corner. There is light age wear with some foxing, corner folds, and minor blemishes, and a faint aged paper odour. Please refer to the photos for detailed condition.
Dimensions of a print: approx. H 36.5 cm W 25 cm
