【Product details】

This Meiji-period triptych by 梅堂国政 (Baidō Kokunimasa, active in late 19th century), also known as 五代歌川国政 (Utagawa Kunimasa V) and the eldest son of 三代歌川国貞 (Utagawa Kunisada III) vividly depicts the grand military parade marking the triumphant return of the 大元師 (Daigensui, Generalissimo) to Tokyo following Japan’s victory in the First Sino-Japanese War.

The composition shows cavalry officers riding in formation with the rising-sun regimental flags, accompanied by troops and colour guards, while government officials stand in formal greeting before the gate of a prominent building adorned with flags. Published by 松成蛍郎 (Matsunari Hotarō, also known as Suharaya), the work combines the dynamism of a news illustration with the bold colours and composition characteristic of Meiji-era sensō-e, war prints.

The print employs urushi-e (lacquer-picture) effects on the black areas of the uniforms, adding depth and subtle sheen despite the minor printing imperfections typical of some Meiji impressions.

All three sheets each have a small hole at one corner. Minor foxing, light blemishes, and small creases to edges and corners are present, along with a faint aged paper odour. Please refer to the photographs for further details.

Dimensions of a print: approx. H 37.5 cm W 25 cm
