A dynamic Triptych war print from the First Sino-Japanese War, depicting the advance of Japanese troops near Taizen. Yōsai Nobukazu (揚斎延一, 1872–1944) was a late-Meiji ukiyo-e artist and a pupil of the celebrated master Yōshū Chikanobu / Toyohara Chikanobu(楊洲/豊原 周延). His work combines vivid Meiji color with energetic, Western-inflected perspective and realism, and he is best known for senso-e that captured modernization and patriotic sentiment.
Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895): this composition shows a scene from Japan’s campaign against Qing China over control of Korea. Japan’s decisive victory marked its emergence as a modern power. As with many war prints of the time, the image glorifies Japan—the soldiers appear brave and unstoppable, while the enemy is scarcely shown or depicted in retreat—reflecting the period’s nationalist tone.
Printing notes: the black areas of the uniforms, shoes, and equipment display urushi-e (lacquer-picture) effects, adding a subtle gloss and depth. As is typical of some Meiji impressions, there are minor imperfections in the printing, but the sheen still enriches the surface.
Condition: all three sheets each have a small hole at one corner. There is minor foxing, light blemishing, a few small edge tears and corner folds, and a faint aged paper odor. Please refer to the photographs for further details.
Dimensions of a print: approx. H 36.5 cm W 24.8 cm
