This striking hanging scroll captures the dynamic interplay between a vivid red sun and rolling ocean waves, rendered in bold yet harmonious brushwork. The rising sun—an enduring symbol of vitality, renewal, and Japan itself—emerges above stylized waves, whose rhythmic motion evokes both power and serenity. The composition balances energy and stillness, making it suitable for seasonal display or contemplative interior settings. The work is signed and sealed by Kobayashi Ritsudo, a Tokyo-born painter known for his expressive depictions of animals, figures, flowers, and birds. This particular piece showcases his sensitivity to natural motifs and his ability to infuse traditional subjects with emotional resonance. The scroll is mounted in patterned silk and comes with its original wooden storage box (tomobako), inscribed and sealed, adding authenticity and cultural value. A compelling example of mid-20th-century Japanese painting, ideal for collectors of symbolic art and decorative scrolls.
