Romain Malfliet was a Belgian artist born in 1910 in Sint-Niklaas-Waas and died in 2006, also in Sint-Niklaas-Waas. He was a painter, watercolorist, and primarily an etcher. He trained at the Academy in Sint-Niklaas, the Academy in Ghent, and the Higher Institute in Antwerp. He was a student of artists such as J. De Bruycker, W. Vaes, and Is. Opsomer. He created landscapes and cityscapes, among other works. He found his inspiration primarily in the Waasland region and in Antwerp. He was a member of the Kringen Pictura and the Koninklijke Wase Kunstkring (Royal Wase Art Circle). In 1979, a tribute book, "Romain Malfliet and the Land of Waas," was published, featuring nearly three hundred of his etchings and texts by W. Melis and W. Persoon. He was a graphic arts teacher at the Academy of Sint-Niklaas (1951-1975) and a teacher at the Academies of Temse and Hemiksem. A tribute exhibition was held in Sint-Niklaas in 1990 on the occasion of his 80th birthday. His work is exhibited in museums such as Sint-Niklaas, Brussels, Antwerp, Dendermonde, and Temse.
