Raven's Variable Matrix
Picture size: 11 x 22 cm; framed: 21.5 x 33 cm

Henri Van Herwegen first made his mark in the mid-1960s. He conceived the pseudonym Panamarenko—a reference to Pan American Airlines, with a Slavic-sounding suffix—and in 1966, he had his first solo exhibition at the Antwerp Wide White Space Gallery, featuring actions, happenings, and a number of poetic objects. Through the gallery, he connected with foreign artists, such as Joseph Beuys, who convinced Panamarenko that what he was creating was art. Over the following decades, Panamarenko gained fame for his aircraft, cars, submarines, and fragile mechanical creatures born from his imagination, until he ceased his artistic activities in 2005 and retired. Panamarenko passed away on December 14, 2019.
