A beautiful Tsugaru-nuri Tsuishitsu Suzuribako (writing box) made by Miyakoshi Shitsugai (宮腰漆涯), crafted in the Showa period.
Tsugaru lacquerware is a traditional craft produced in the Tsugaru region of Aomori Prefecture, especially around Hirosaki City. Since 1873 it has been widely known as Tsugaru-nuri, and is also referred to as “Karenuri” (唐塗). In 1975 it was officially designated a Traditional Craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and in 2017 it was recognized as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan. Tsugaru-nuri is valued for its durability and practicality while at the same time presenting a refined and elegant appearance. Its hallmark is the unique technique of togidashi-kawari-nuri, in which multiple layers of colored lacquer are applied and then polished to reveal beautiful, intricate patterns. Within this tradition, Tsuishitsu (堆漆) represents a method where many layers are built up, creating striking depth and complex color variations.
The exterior of this suzuribako is decorated in vivid togidashi kawari-nuri, with a dynamic marbled pattern in red, orange, green, and other hues. The surface is further enhanced with a three-dimensional, wave-like texture that catches the light elegantly. The interior and underside are finished in black lacquer, and the box comes with an inner tray and writing board, reflecting its traditional function for housing calligraphy tools.
The accompanying wooden storage box is signed and sealed by the artist, reading “津軽住 宮腰漆涯” (Miyakoshi Shitsugai, residing in Tsugaru).
The suzuribako shows a few very faint scuff marks in some areas, but otherwise remains in very good used condition. The wooden box bears a few tape marks, as seen in the photographs. Overall, the condition is good to very good for its age. Please refer carefully to the photographs for details of the condition.
Dimensions: approx. H 4 cm W 20.3 cm D 25.7 cm
