Annibale Carracci is one of the most important painters of the 16th century. His works ranged from genre painting to landscapes, portraits to religious scenes, drawings to self-portraits, and together with Caravaggio and Rubens, he laid the foundations for the birth of Baroque in Italy.
The painting, of excellent quality, depicts the figure of John the Baptist, the prophet who announced the arrival of the Messiah and baptized him in the Jordan River. He directly addresses the viewer with a confident and aware expression. His physiognomy and attitude are typical of Annibale Carracci's mature work, and they have given rise to various allegorical interpretations, both Christian and pagan, although these are somewhat forced given the unequivocal nature of the subject.
