Ritratto di Sir Gorilla, XIX century, oil painting, country of origin Gibraltar.
Description from the seller
Antique English painting from the 19th century
“Portrait of Sir Gorilla”
Oil on canvas - very rare work, ideal for collecting
Canvas size: 66 x 48 cm
Ancient caricature portrait inspired by the evolutionist debate and 19th-century satirical painting... a rare and unpublished work
From a private collection, London
Period: 1800 / 1850
Area: England
Satirical or surreal work: it represents a gorilla wearing elegant human clothes (black suit, red tie, ring and cigar), in the typical style of 19th-century English portraits.
Anthropomorphic paintings (a gorilla in civilian clothes) are part of this satirical tradition. Placing an animal in gentleman's attire became an ironic way to reflect on the evolutionary closeness between humans and apes.
This is an ancient anthropomorphic painting, created as a caricature or humorous work, playing on the association between the austerity of official portraits and the animal face.
Ideal for collecting and investing.
From a private collection
With certificate of authenticity in accordance with the law
Professional packaging
Condition report: The work is presented on its first canvas, with restorations visible from the back and minor defects consistent with its period. Extensive crazing along the entire pictorial line.
* The work is sold unframed; the frame used in the photos is for illustrative purposes only. Before shipping, the work will be placed in a custom-made gold wooden frame as a courtesy to the buyer.
