Hambüchen attended the Kunstgewerbeschule in Düsseldorf. From 1895, he began working as an independent artist, initially as a landscape painter. In 1898, he traveled to the Belgian coast and since then specialized in beach and sea views. Until the First World War, he would return annually in the summers to the North Sea coast. In any case, in 1905, 1906, and 1908, he worked in Katwijk aan Zee, and subsequently, until 1914, also regularly in Nieuwpoort on the Flemish coast.
Hambüchen is considered part of the Düsseldorf School and painted in an Impressionist style. With broad and loose brushstrokes, he depicted the fishing boats, the beach with grand clouds, and the fishing community in the surf after the catch. He died in 1939 at the age of 70.
