AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Here we have a superb 19th Century oil on canvas by Listed British artist George Garth Fryer. This charming French Seascape depicts a picturesque busy harbour scene, on a misty morning as work begins on another day. A blanket of clouds hover as light from the Suns rays find their way through. He has interwind the colours of the French flag, blue, white and red through the sails to the clothing on the figures on the left. The artwork is signed lower left G G Fryer. Written in pencil verso is the title “French Coast”. A well balanced painting that would grace any wall in your home.

Biography :
George Garth Fryer was an accomplished British painter of coastal scenes, maritime subjects and landscapes. He was fascinated by sunlight and sunsetting which illuminated all his paintings. His art always contained the radiant glow of an early sun, the sea shimmers with a calm serenity. Moored boats are readied for the day ahead, while a family works in the foreground. Distant sails are visible like flickering candles through the golden haze of morning or evening. Fryer preferred nature as its most alluring, when the light, either at sunrise or sunset, creates an evocative mood. His coastal vistas, captured the imagination and transports us into an idealised vision of seafaring life. Searching for the picturesque, he painted views across Europe, from rugged North Wales, to French coast, to the sun-drenched lakes of Italy and from the Rhine Valley to the Bosphorus. Each portrayed in his typically romanticised style. He lived, for the majority of his life, in London dying in 1912.
