Lluís Maria Güell i Cortina (Vilafranca del Penedès, 1909 – Barcelona, 2001) was a prominent Catalan painter, educator, and cultural manager, renowned for his landscape work and his contributions to artistic education.
Biography and work
He began in art in Vilafranca del Penedès, linked to local artistic movements and the magazine Hèlix. He was a disciple of Joaquim Mir.
His work mainly focuses on landscape art, with a marked interest in the big skies and light, using a chromatic range that evolved from pointillism to tones closer to gray and atmospheres inspired by Corot and Turner.
He was also a renowned mural painter, creating religious frescoes in places like Ribes de Freser and Salou.
As an educator, he was a professor at the Escola de la Llotja de Barcelona and director of the Escola Massana (1956-1976), where he promoted multiple art and design sections.
In 1988, he was awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi by the Generalitat de Catalunya.
He actively participated in the cultural and artistic life of Catalonia, also working as an interior decorator, essayist, poet, and collector.
