A.R. Penck (1939-2017)
The German painter, sculptor, musician, and writer A.R. Penck, whose real name is Ralf Winkler, was born in 1939 in Dresden and initially worked in East Berlin during Germany's division. Penck's images are inspired by prehistoric art and are characterized by the use of visual language elements such as stick figures, signs, and symbols.
Penck is also regarded as the father of the 'Neue Wilden,' a movement from the early 1980s characterized by an ironic and provocative aesthetic.
The multiple-time Documenta participant has been awarded many art prizes and is represented in numerous significant collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
