Description from the seller
Eugène VERDYEN (1836-1903)
The death of despotism, 1864
Oil on canvas
Signed and dated at the bottom left: "E. Verdyen 1864"
Stamped on the back of the chassis; trace of an old wax seal.
Dimensions: 115 × 95 cm
Tightened canvas
This important canvas by Eugène Verdyen depicts an allegorical scene of great dramatic intensity, titled The Death of Despotism. Created in 1864, the work fully aligns with the tradition of 19th-century historical and moralizing compositions, characterized by theatrical staging, clear symbolism, and a complex arrangement of figures.
The composition is structured into two contrasting registers: in the foreground, the body of a toppled tyrant lying on the ground, surrounded by attributes of fallen power; in the background, a crowd of men, women, and children gathered around prominent figures, some dressed in brightly colored togas, others wrapped in white draperies. Above the scene, celestial figures blowing large trumpets emphasize the visionary nature of the subject and give the whole an almost apocalyptic dimension.
The warm palette, dominated by reds, ochres, and deep greens, as well as the expressive treatment of faces, highlights the dramatic character of the scene. The technique is vigorous, with visible brushwork and a controlled use of chiaroscuro, typical of Verdyen's work in his allegorical and historical pieces.
The work has particular documentary interest: it is signed, dated, titled on the back, and bears the trace of an old wax seal, probably related to a previous collection. The canvas has been re-stretched, which is common for works of this size and age.
General condition
Visible cracks on the surface, consistent with age; stretched canvas; stable condition.
Remarks
Large historical composition from the 19th century, rare on the market. Powerful subject, highly symbolic, executed during a pivotal period in Eugène Verdyen's career. An attractive piece for collectors of Belgian art, allegorical painting, or ambitious historical scenes.
The frame will be shipped by registered mail and very well protected.
