Description from the seller
Elegant and scenographic 19th-century copy after Salvator Rosa (1615–1673), master of Neapolitan baroque known for his stormy seascapes, dramatic landscapes, and romantic ruins.
The work, created by a painter of the Italian school from the late 19th century, accurately and richly detailedly captures the theatrical taste, chiaroscuro, and atmospheres typical of Rosa:
ruins in the foreground
Calm sea with boats.
fishermen figures
mountains in the background
Warm and piercing light typical of the Baroque.
The composition is very balanced and executed with confident skill. The details of the architectures, boats, and figures demonstrate good craftsmanship, as was typical of 'painter of manner' artists active in the nineteenth century who drew on seventeenth-century models for the European collector market.
Technique
Oil on canvas
Dimensions
100 × 70 cm (canvas only)
Period
End of the 19th century (circa 1870–1900)
Condition
Diffuse, stable, and uniform craquelure across the entire surface.
No tear or hole visible.
Well-preserved color, with a possible vintage patina.
original 19th-century wooden frame
Note
Decorative opera of great impact, ideal for classic environments, entrances, staircases, and important living rooms. Quality copies by Salvator Rosa are well regarded in the market for the scenic strength of the subjects.
Italian private collection.
Professional packaging and tracked shipping.
