Hans Orlowski (1894–1967) – Men’s Head II, woodcut behind glass
A unique woodcut by Hans Orlowski, one of the most outstanding German graphic artists of the 20th century. Born in Königsberg, he studied and worked in Berlin, where he was a professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste. Orlowski is regarded as one of the leading representatives of German Expressionism, and his works are part of prestigious collections, including the Berlinische Galerie, Kupferstichkabinett Berlin, Hamburger Kunsthalle, and Albertinum in Dresden.
Orlowski's work is characterized by an extraordinary expressive power – dynamic, confident cuts in wood create intense portraits full of emotion and psychological depth. In the Männerkopf series, the artist focuses on facial expression, bringing out tension, drama, and the inner strength of the human being.
