The formal attire — consisting of a dark overcoat, waistcoat, and a white, multi-wrap cravat — reflects the men's fashion of the first half of the century.

The painterly rendering is fine and meticulous, with particular attention to the gradation of the flesh tones and the softness of the curls, typical of miniature portraits intended for the high society of the period. The small signature or initials visible on the right side suggest the hand of a professional miniaturist, although unidentified.
