Description from the seller

A ten-volume illustrated set of this monumental fresco that encompasses all the events from 1789 to 1799, combining dramatic narration and political analysis.

The first volumes describe the crisis of the Ancien Régime, the convening of the États généraux, the formation of the Assemblée nationale, and the storming of the Bastille, emphasizing the popular momentum and the fall of monarchical structures.

The intermediate volumes trace the radicalization of the revolutionary process: the war against European powers, the fall of Louis XVI, the nascent Republic, the Terror, and factional struggles, where Thiers depicts the great figures — Mirabeau, Danton, Robespierre, Marat — with a vivid and often critical style.

The latest volumes cover the Thermidorian Reaction, the Directory, and Napoleon Bonaparte's military campaigns, notably in Italy and Egypt, which herald the end of the Revolution and the advent of the Consulate.

The work is distinguished by its literary breath, its concern with dramatization, and its liberal interpretation: Thiers emphasizes patriotic momentum and representative institutions, while condemning the excesses of revolutionary violence.
