Biography
Born in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, in 1935 as Christo Wladimirow Jawaschew, Christo studied at the Academy of Arts in Sofia from 1953 to 1956. In 1958, he moved to Paris, where he began wrapping objects such as cans or bottles in resin-impregnated canvas and tying them up, and he met his future wife, Jean-Claude. As a couple, they are known for their coverings of buildings or landscapes. For example, in 1969, they veiled an Australian coastline, in 1984 the Pont Neuf in Paris, and in 1995 the Reichstag building in Berlin. The project 'The Gates,' consisting of 7,503 metal gates with hanging fabric panels in Central Park, New York, was completed in 2005. After Jean-Claude's death in 2009, Christo continued working alone. He died in May 2020 in New York. His project, originally scheduled for April 2020 but postponed multiple times—the covering of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris—is still planned to be realized in 2021.
