Artist biography
Josep Novellas i Montaner, known as Pepe, was a Catalan painter and sculptor born in Mataró (Maresme) on January 27, 1950, and died in the same city on February 21, 2009.
He studied at the Maristas de Valldemia and later at the Escolapios de Santa Anna. From a very young age, he showed an interest in drawing, despite his family having no artistic tradition. He started studying Law but abandoned it to dedicate himself entirely to painting after coming into contact with a very active artistic group in Mataró at the time, where he was influenced by figures such as Pere Màrtir Viada, Ricard Jordà, Antoni Gómez-Cabot, Yago Vilamañà, Eduard Alcoy, Lázaro, and Josep Maria Rovira i Brull.
His first solo exhibition was at the Mataró Municipal Museum in 1968, receiving great critical acclaim. Later, he exhibited in galleries across Catalonia and Spain, as well as in European cities (Paris, Lyon, Bilbao, Amsterdam) and in America.
One of the milestones of his career occurred in 1992 when he was distinguished as an official artist of the Barcelona Olympic Games, which led to one of his works being hung at the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne. Subsequently, Mataró dedicated retrospective exhibitions to him and commissioned a sculpture in honor of Antonio Machado, inaugurated in 2003 and dedicated to the Republican exiles.
Novellas' work is characterized by a marked originality, a dreamlike and symbolic tendency, and a meticulous technique that combines figuration with collage, graphite, and other procedures. In sculpture, he stands out for his monument to Machado. His production is deeply linked to the analysis of the human being and social reflection, imbued with critique, irony, and also a hedonistic view of everyday life and its pleasures.
He was one of the essential members of the so-called "Escola de Mataró," along with other prominent artists, and was considered an artistic and conceptual reference in his city and beyond.
During the democratic transition, he was one of the founders of a satirical magazine, and maintained friendships with writers and poets such as Ventura Ametller and Manuel Patricio.
Pepe Novellas left an essential personal and artistic legacy for the city of Mataró and for Catalan contemporary art.
