Berkenbos, a 19th‑century oil on canvas landscape by Cornelis Kuijpers (1864–1932), Netherlands, hand-signed, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Beautiful painting with a charming depiction of a birch forest, with a woman in traditional Veluwe costume in the background. The painting is in good condition and was created using oil paint on canvas.
The artist is Cornelis Kuijpers (1864-1932).
Cornelis Kuijpers was born on September 20, 1864, in Gorinchem and died on October 29, 1932, in Soest. He is known as a Dutch painter and watercolorist, especially appreciated for his landscapes and water scenes. He is considered a descendant of the Hague School.
Kuijpers grew up in an artist family: his father, Jan Kuypers, painted landscapes and genre scenes. Cornelis initially received painting lessons from his father and later attended the Quellinusschool in Amsterdam.
He mainly painted natural landscapes and water scenes, often in typical Dutch environments. His work clearly shows the influence of the Haagse School, with calm, realistic scenes, soft color use, and attention to atmospheric lighting. Nature itself is always central; human figures are usually small and subordinate to the landscape.
Kuijpers often worked en plein air (outside, in nature), and his landscapes are characterized by:
Kuijpers regularly exhibited with contemporaries, including at the Renkum artists' association 'Pictura Veluvensis.' He received awards at international salons in Barcelona (1907 and 1911), indicating that his work was appreciated beyond the Netherlands.
The list was restored in 2024 at one location by Suchtelen van de Haare (see photo), and the frame is otherwise in original condition. The canvas measures 63x37 cm (height x width). The restoration is hardly visible.
