A very special work created by Alberto Manfredi (Reggio Emilia, 1930-2001), a painter and engraver of great refinement, who was long a professor of Techniques of Engraving at the Florence Academy. His deep literary culture—also developed in Bologna alongside Giorgio Morandi—contributed to the popularity of his works among writers like Sciascia and Bufalino and directed him towards the livre d’artiste, with over a hundred illustrated editions. A rigorous engraver, distant from trends, rooted in the tradition from Degas to De Pisis, he applied the same sober language to painting. He exhibited numerous solo shows in Italy and abroad, culminating in a major retrospective at Palazzo Magnani shortly before his death. Alberto Manfredi’s works are found in prestigious museum and private collections. He is remembered as one of the most beloved artists of his generation, alongside Maccari, of whom he was a great friend, sharing a love for the arts of engraving, and Morandi, with whom he had a long and fruitful cultural exchange.
Our gallery collaborated directly with Maestro Alberto Manfredi from 1969 until 2001 (the year of his passing), organizing two solo exhibitions of the artist (the first in 1979, the second in 1983). Manfredi also participated in various of our group exhibitions and reviews, and we published a fine etching by him.
