This scroll comes with an appraisal box by 'Hirao Chikka' 平尾竹霞 (1855-1939)
高橋草坪 Takahashi Sohei (1802-1833)
Nanga artist of the late Edo period. Born into a merchant family in Bungo (Oita Prefecture). Studied under 田能村竹田 Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835) at the age of 19. Chikuden loved and recognized his talent, saying that Sohei’s well-done work was excellent than his own. There is an anecdote that 浦上春琴 Uragami Shunkin (1779-1846), 25 years older than Sohei, mistook Sohei's landscape paintings, which he had not yet seen, for the works of a famous ancient Chinese painter. His name was well known in Kyoto and Osaka. However, he suffered from a chest ailment and died before Chikuden. His works range from elegant to heavy and serious.
Age: 1822 Summer / 壬午仲夏
with signature 'Sohei U' 草坪 雨 and seal 'Sohei' 草坪 'Ko U' 高雨
A tranquil hanging scroll (kakemono) by Takahashi Sohei, a literati painter of the late Edo period known for his elegant brushwork and poetic sensibility. Active during a time when Chinese-style literati painting (bunjin-ga) flourished in Japan, Sohei’s works often reflect philosophical calm and refined taste. This composition, dated “1822 Summer / 壬午仲夏,” depicts a solitary scholar seated beneath a gently swaying willow, enjoying the cool breeze in quiet contemplation. The scene is rendered in soft ink tones, with delicate foliage and flowing robes that evoke the serenity of early summer and the introspective spirit of classical East Asian art. The scroll is accompanied by a double-layered appraisal box (niju tomobako) bearing the inscription of Hirao Chikka (1855–1939), a respected scholar and connoisseur of Japanese painting. His authentication adds historical depth and collectible value to the piece. A rare and evocative work that embodies the aesthetics of Edo-period literati culture, ideal for collectors of Japanese ink painting, seasonal themes, and philosophical art.
