A hand-painted Japanese hanging scroll of Bush Clovers, signed Yusen with seal Okajima, dated 1940 and with its original tomobako, measuring 178.3 cm high by 24.3 cm wide and weighing 220 g including the box.
Description from the seller
A graceful hanging scroll featuring blooming hagi (bush clovers), signed by Okajima Yusen (岡島友仙). While little is known about the artist, the work reflects refined brushwork and seasonal sensitivity typical of early Shōwa-period nihonga. The composition depicts delicate bush clover blossoms—an autumnal motif deeply rooted in Japanese poetry and aesthetics. Associated with subtle beauty, impermanence, and emotional depth, hagi often appears in classical waka and renga as a symbol of fleeting grace. The scroll is housed in its original wooden box (tomobako), which bears an inscription dated 1940 (Shōwa kōshin / 昭和庚辰), offering historical context and provenance. A charming and culturally resonant piece for collectors of seasonal Japanese painting and early 20th-century scroll art.
