Collection of Anatomical Engravings A fine collection of 15 engraved anatomical plates on laid paper, each measuring approximately 17 × 10 cm, originating from Tome Cinquième of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon’s monumental Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière, Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1750. These detailed engravings were drawn by Jacques de Sève (Paris, 1715 – Paris, 1795), a noted French draftsman, engraver, and illustrator active during the 18th century. De Sève is best known for his elegant and scientifically precise plates for Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle, as well as his work for other Enlightenment-era natural history publications. The plates depict human anatomy, including the skeletal structure, musculature, internal organs, brain, and fetal anatomy, rendered with remarkable clarity and aesthetic refinement typical of De Sève’s style. Each bears the engraved plate and page numbering (e.g., Tom. V, Pl. 8, Pag. 270), and some are signed “De Sève del.” (drawn by De Sève) and “Moitte sculp.” (engraved by Moitte). Condition: Clean impressions with light toning and minor marginal wear consistent with age; overall very good. These engravings exemplify the intersection of art and science in the French Enlightenment—executed with both anatomical accuracy and artistic grace—and represent an important contribution to the visual culture of early modern natural history.
