A Napoleon III giltwood mirror,
France, Paris, circa 1855–1870
Dimensions: 147 x 83 cm.
A large and elegant wall mirror carved in relief with scrolling foliage, acanthus leaves and rocaille motifs, surmounted by a shaped cresting centred by a shell ornament. The carved wooden frame gilt in gold leaf over a bole ground, retaining its original gilding with a warm, naturally aged patina. The Rococo Revival design characteristic of the Second Empire taste. The mirror plate silvered and likely original. The reverse with an original wooden board and the others replaced.
Condition: Very good, with minor wear and traces of past restorations consistent with age and use.
Provenance: An apartment in the Marais, Paris.
