Antico Egitto Faenza Amuleto di Khnum a testa di ariete

A fine Egyptian faience amulet, depicting the ram-headed god Khnum. He is depicted in the typical pose, with the left leg striding forwards and both arms held at his sides. Careful moulding denotes his large, curving horns, represented with a series of dots, and delicate facial features. He wears a short kilt and tripartite wig. The amulet features a flat integrated base and dorsal pillar. The amulet has been perforated horizontally near the middle, through its back and dorsal pillar, for suspension. Earthly encrustations to the surface. Signs of wear as consistent with age, such as minor chipping. Fine detailing. The ram was revered in Ancient Egypt for its virility and creative powers, and was hence an animal form adopted by multiple deities. This particular amulet shows the breed of ram with horns curling into the cheeks, rather than twisted horns projecting above the head. Khnum is an ancient Egyptian god primarily associated with fertility, water, and creation. He was often depicted as a ram-headed man and was believed to be the divine potter who created human beings and their "ka" (life force) on a potter's wheel using clay. Khnum was also linked to the Nile River's inundation and was seen as a protector of the dead. Measurements: (circa) L 1.1cm x W 0.6cm x H 3.1cm Provenance: Ex. UK Collection 1920s – 1940s.
