Dutch Art Deco Footstool, Modernist / Hague School Style, ca. 1920s A small Dutch Art Deco footstool in the modernist Hague School tradition, dating from the 1920s. Compact, geometric and full of character. The stool has a solid oak base with a rectangular shape, stepped feet and notched cut-outs, giving it a distinctly modernist construction. The design is closer to the rational, architectural language of the Hague School than to the more exuberant Amsterdam School. The original upholstered cushion is removable and sits neatly within the wooden frame. The woollen fabric has a wonderful geometric pattern in warm ochre, brown and beige tones: forms arranged like a small abstract plan, very much in keeping with the Art Deco taste for stylised geometry. Footstools like this were not only decorative, but practical. Dutch houses in the early 20th century were often less well insulated and could be draughty; a footstool helped keep the feet away from the cold floor. A small domestic luxury. Today it makes a beautiful accent piece, especially next to a modernist Dutch Art Deco armchair with a similar modernist / Hague School design. These small stools are now sometimes used as meditation stools, but this example may be a little too small for comfortable seating. The stool is in good condition overall. The wooden base has been refinished, and the original wooden frabric on the top shows minor wear. The cushion can be removed. Dimensions Length: 30 cm / 11.8 in Depth: 21 cm / 8.3 in Height: 11 cm / 4.3 in
