"gold flecks" in genuine lapis lazuli are naturally occurring pyrite (also known as "fool's gold"). Lapis is not a single mineral but a rock composed mainly of lazurite (which gives it its rich blue color), calcite (white veins), and pyrite. These golden inclusions are highly prized, as they create a beautiful contrast that resembles a starry night sky.
