The surrealists wanted to see Frida as one of their own, but she was always reluctant for one reason: Frida does not paint dreams... she paints her reality. ‘I didn't know she was a surrealist until André Breton came to Mexico and told me. Her life was marked by several factors: ill health was one of them. The polio of her childhood and above all a terrible bus accident left after-effects that changed her life (pain, amputations, inability to bear children...), but which also initiated her into art. During the long period of convalescence in hospital Frida Kahlo produced her first works of art. Another factor that marked her life and work was her marriage(s) to Diego Rivera, an institution in Mexico, which proved to be a massive influence on Frida's art. Although Kahlo was polygamous and bisexual, her promiscuous husband's infidelities made quarrels a daily occurrence and were also documented in the artist's paintings. Frida Kahlo's work is difficult to classify. So closely linked to her personal life, it could be said that Frida's paintings are both subject and object. Undoubtedly, and although she herself denied it, there is a massive surrealist influence (it is not all dreams, there is also the magic, the myths and the unconscious that permeates Mexico). There is also an evident expressionist influence. Many wanted to see in her work a primitivism close to Rousseau, and of course the naïve naivety and naïve childishness of the French can be perceived, although Kahlo, like Rivera, always sought to show an exalted nationalism, an art that expressed the Mexican national affirmation. Her status as a woman was also central to her work. Breaking taboos on the female body and sexuality, her work always sought to distance herself from what a woman of her time might do, and she showed herself to be harsh, excessive, violent, active... She is therefore a kind of symbol of feminism in art. Like Dalí, Kahlo created the character of Frida, with the way she dressed and groomed herself, with indigenous clothing and beads, her refusal to pluck her eyebrows and moustache and her passion for beer. According to the artist herself, she used the symbolism of colours for her work: Green: warm light, good; brown: leaf going to earth, colour of mole; yellow: madness, fear and illness, but also something of the sun and joy; cobalt blue: electricity, love and purity; black: nothing is black; green leaves: sadness, science; greenish yellow: madness and mystery, ghosts wear suits of that colour; dark green: colour of good business and bad advertisements; navy blue: distance, although tenderness can also be that colour.
