So many poems were printed in in 'The Times' during the first year of WWI, that when they issued a 16-page supplement with the newspaper of August 9, they were spoiled for choice. Some were omitted, but poems by Thomas Hardy and Walter de la Mare from the Times Literary Supplement (TLS) were included. 

Both poets managed to avoid mentioning the Almighty or the British Empire, but the general theme that ‘God is on our side’ was evident. Two years later, with huge losses and both sides trapped in the trenches of the Western Front it would not have been so clear. 

The artist that drew all of the striking illustrations was Joseph Simpson. Born in Carlisle in 1879, he studied at the Glasgow School of Art. After ten years in Edinburgh, Simpson moved to London where he pursued a career as an illustrator and poster artist. 

He also painted portraits, and his etchings sold widely. Simpson was appointed an official war artist in France during the First World War, for which he was awarded the CBE. He died in London in 1939.

Robert Bridges who wrote 'Wake Up, England' was the Poet Laureate. Thomas Hardy’s – 'Men Who March Away' -. was published in the TLS on 9 Sept., 1914 as 'Song of the Soldiers'.
