A Meiji Period Gilt Wooden Figure of Amida Nyorai (Amitābha)
Japan, Meiji period (1868–1912)
A finely carved wooden figure of Amida Nyorai (Amitābha Buddha), decorated with applied gilding on the wood, depicting the Buddha seated in a serene meditative posture. The figure displays the samāhitā mudra, a hand gesture uniquely associated with Amida Buddha, symbolising deep meditation in which all spiritual and psychic energy is gathered in the abdominal centre below the navel.
The Buddha is seated upon a lotus throne with a well-carved hexagonal base, accompanied by an attached halo that enhances its devotional presence. The gilded decoration is slightly worn through age and devotional use, yet remains visible in parts of the robe, bearing witness to the figure’s original splendour.
Amida Nyorai is the principal Buddha of Pure Land Buddhism, revered as the embodiment of infinite compassion and salvation. In Vajrayana traditions, Amitābha is associated with longevity, discernment, pure perception, and the purification of the aggregates through profound awareness of the emptiness of all phenomena. According to Buddhist sutras, Amitābha accumulated immeasurable merit through countless past lives as Dharmākara Bodhisattva, culminating in his vow to liberate all beings. His name, Amitābha, translates as “Infinite Light.”
Dimensions (approx.):
Buddha figure: H 8 cm
Throne and halo: H 20 × W 8 cm
Condition: In very good condition; a small drying crack in the robe, but otherwise only a nice warm patina.
Shipping: The lot will be securely packaged and shipped with insurance.
