Beschrijving van de verkoper
Virgin and Child – Carved Walnut – Southern Netherlands / Germany – circa 1650-1700
A beautiful and devotional Virgin and Child sculpture, carved in walnut wood, originating from the Southern Netherlands or the Rhineland / Southern Germany, dating to approximately mid to late 17th century .
The Virgin is depicted standing gracefully while holding the Christ Child on her arm. The composition follows the traditional Hodegetria type, where Mary presents Christ to the viewer as the source of salvation.
The figure was most likely intended for private devotion or for placement within a small altar or niche.
The sculpture retains a beautiful aged surface with traces of historic patina and devotional wear. The Christ Child has unfortunately lost one arm, which is common in sculptures of this age.
The reverse is relatively simply carved, suggesting the piece may originally have been part of a devotional setting or small altar.
