Title: The Eastern Seas; or Voyages and Adventures in the Indian Archipelago in 1832-33-34

Author: George Windsor Earl, M.R.A.S. Publisher: Wm. H. Allen and Co., Leadenhall Street, London, 1837

Edition: First Edition

Description:

Rare first edition of an important early travel narrative describing voyages and observations across maritime Southeast Asia - Java, Borneo, the Malay Peninsula, Siam, and Singapore. Includes a detailed early account of the present state of Singapore (1830s) and its commercial prospects under British influence.

Dedicated to Dr. José d'Almeida of Singapore, one of the city's earliest European settlers and a key historical figure in its early colonial development - a notable association.
Illustrated with several folding maps, including the Indian Archipelago, Java, Borneo, and Singapore region.

Modern professional rebinding with gilt-titled spine ("Earl's Indian Archipelago") and marbled boards. Interior clean, light age toning and minor foxing on some pages. All maps present and well preserved.

Format: Octavo (approx. 22 × 14 cm) Pages: XII + 461 pp.

Condition: Very good. Tight binding, clean interior, complete with maps.

Provenance: Private European collection.

Historical importance:

An early source on Southeast Asian geography, trade, and ethnography. Earl's work influenced later explorers and colonial administrators in the region. Increasingly scarce, especially complete with all maps.
