Kabuki Play: Kumo no Uwaki Onna Narukami 雲艶女鳴神 - 1854 - Utagawa Kunisada (1785-1865) - Japonia - Edo Period (1600-1868)

Good condition, has some creases and dirt. SEE:https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Actors_Reversing_Gender_Roles_in_the_Story_of_Narukami_LACMA_M.2006.136.289a-c_(1_of_3).jpg SEE: https://collections.lacma.org/node/213141 Description: Great kabuki scene from the play "Kumo no Uwaki Onna Narukami," a female version of the famous tale of Narukami, who imprisoned the god of rain behind a waterfall and caused a drought all over the country. Here, the young man Tomanosuke has come to hermitage beside a waterfall in an attempt to trick the nun Narukami into breaking the spell. Here, he kneels beside the rushing water, holding a shallow cup as one of Narukami's acolytes pours sake for him from a gourd container. He looks up over her shoulder at the smiling Narukami, watching her with suspicion. The beauty grins happily, a string of prayer beads hanging from beneath her sleeve. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Dannosuke V as Hakuun-ni, Asao Okuyama III as Kokuun-ni, Bando Takesaburo I as Tomanosuke, and Bando Shuka I as Onna Narukami. Nice expressive figures in a rugged natural setting, detailed with embossing on the white kimono of the acolytes. Author: Utagawa Kunisada (Japanese: 歌川 国貞; 1786 – 12 January 1865), also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III (三代 歌川 豊国, Sandai Utagawa Toyokuni), was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist. He is considered the most popular, prolific and commercially successful designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in 19th-century Japan. In his own time, his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries, Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi. NOTICE
