Fernet Branca Banquet, London (1970s)
This is not a polite dinner party.
This is excess, theatre, and controlled chaos — staged with nerve, humour and a shoestring budget by Michael Joseph for what was meant to become one of the boldest alcohol advertisements of its time.
Conceived as a wrap-around image for Fernet Branca, the shoot gathered nearly seventy participants around a single, groaning table. There was little money but plenty of spirit: as my father recalled, most of the models were paid in alcohol and a modest £5 taxi fare home — an arrangement perfectly in tune with the anarchic mood of the production.
The intention was clear: to celebrate indulgence, pleasure and collective abandon. The result was perhaps too successful. The client — whose uncle, inconveniently, was the Pope — feared that the nudity, decadence and barely contained debauchery might provoke outrage. The campaign was quietly shelved before release.
This image is one of the survivors.
The image with its black border posesses an immediacy and physical presence rarely found in works of this scale and period. It is accompanied by my father's signature — unmistakably authentic.
The mount measures 50 × 40 cm, and the piece will be carefully wrapped and dispatched promptly via Colissimo, with particular attention paid to preserving its historical integrity.
If you win this auction, you will not simply acquire a photograph. You will become the custodian of a never-released advertising image, a candid relic from a moment when brands dared, photographers pushed boundaries, and nobody thought twice about scandal — until it was too late.
A banquet that was never meant to be seen.
A celebration that escaped censorship.
A rare, exuberant fragment of photographic history — now waiting for its next guardian.
