This unique stone is an absolute eye-catcher and can be worn as a statement piece or layered with other jewelry. Larimar is a blue-white, cloudy variety of pectolite that has only been found in two locations so far: in a transformed, ultrabasic volcanic rock on the Barahona Peninsula in the Dominican Republic and in the "Fittà" near Soave, Italy. Larimar is unrelated to blue amber, which also occurs on Hispaniola and is sometimes processed in the same factories in Puerto Plata and in the same way as pectolite. Larimar was only discovered in 1974 (the fact that it was already known to the island's inhabitants is a legend) and has been used commercially as a gemstone since the early 1980s. Compared to white pectolite, larimar is harder (up to 6 on the Mohs scale) and occurs only in dense, finely crystalline aggregates. The sky-blue color is due to small traces of vanadium (not copper, as there are demonstrably Cu-free Larimars).
