Isaac Jean Kevorkian, known as Jean Kevorkian, was born on May 7, 1933 in Paris into a family of Armenian origin. Very early attracted by painting, he began autodidactically before pursuing training at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, while working as a tailor. This double experience — the precision of artisanal craft and the freedom of pictorial gesture — would permanently shape his approach to matter.
If he travels to Turkey, it is mainly Brittany that upends his artistic path. A chance discovery, a few days of vacation, and it becomes a revelation: he decides to settle there. From 1986, his studio in Plouhinec (Finistère) becomes the heart of his work. There he practices modern plein air painting, heir to the Impressionists whom he admires, capturing changing light, marine atmospheres and the vibrations of the moment.
His landscapes, seascapes and still lifes are distinguished by a calm poetry, a painting of simple happiness, where light plays on the water and Breton skies. His style, often described as neo-impressionist, appeals to a wide audience, especially in Anglophone countries. He exhibited in France and abroad, notably in London and California.
Jean Kevorkian died on May 2, 2019 in Douarnenez, leaving behind a coherent, luminous body of work deeply attached to Brittany.
