Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) (after) - "Attersee, 1900"

- Gustav Klimt (after), offset lithograph on heavy-weight textured matte paper (approx. 300gsm - refers to paper thickness/density). - Signed in the plate. - Embossed stamp. - Stamp on verso. - Condition: excellent. Never framed, never exposed. - Size: 42 x 42,5 cm. - Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was one of the most important artists of the Vienna Secession and a central figure in the transition from 19th-century academic painting to modern art. Although widely known for his golden portraits and symbolic compositions, Klimt also produced a remarkable series of landscapes that reveal his interest in colour, atmosphere and decorative surface. His work is frequently discussed alongside masters such as Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso and Egon Schiele, whose innovations defined the development of modern painting and continue to dominate the international art market. One of the finest examples of Klimt’s landscape painting is Attersee (1900), part of the group of works inspired by the Austrian lake region where the artist spent his summer holidays. Unlike his figurative paintings, these landscapes focus on colour harmony, light and pattern, often reducing the scene to almost abstract surfaces. In this composition, the calm water of the lake is rendered through a mosaic-like texture of small brushstrokes, creating a shimmering effect that recalls the techniques of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, especially the work of Monet, Signac and Seurat, while also anticipating the decorative abstraction later explored by Kandinsky and modern painters of the early 20th century. In Attersee, Klimt transforms a simple view of water into a richly textured surface full of colour variations, demonstrating his unique ability to combine natural observation with decorative composition. These landscapes are highly valued by collectors because they show a different side of the artist, closer to the innovations of Monet, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Matisse and Kandinsky, and they play an important role in the evolution from Impressionism to early modern abstraction. Because of its serene beauty, strong decorative appeal and historical importance, images by Gustav Klimt remain extremely popular in the world of fine art prints and interior design, especially among buyers interested in artists such as Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh, Warhol, Rothko, Hopper and Dalí, whose works continue to lead the global art market and modern art auctions.
