Luud Smits

Extraordinarily attractive original Italian 2 Fogli theatrical poster for Victim Five (1964), the British espionage thriller directed by Robert Lynn and starring Lex Barker, Ronald Fraser, Ann Smyrner, and Veronique Vendell.

The film was released in the United States in 1965 under the title “Code 7… Victim 5”, during the peak of the international spy film boom that followed the early James Bond films.

Historical & Film Context

Victim Five belongs to the early wave of European spy and espionage films produced in the mid-1960s, heavily influenced by the success of Dr. No (1962) and the explosion of secret agent cinema across Europe.

Many of these films were international co-productions shot in exotic locations such as:

Hong Kong
Thailand
Mediterranean locations
London and European cities

Actor Lex Barker, originally famous for playing Tarzan in Hollywood, later became one of the most recognizable faces of European adventure, crime, and spy films of the 1960s.

Today, films like Victim Five are considered part of the Eurospy genre, a collectible and increasingly popular niche among film poster collectors.

Artwork & Design

Italian posters from this period are particularly desirable because they were often hand-illustrated, rather than photographic.

Typical Italian poster design elements from this era include:

Large painted portraits
Dramatic action scenes
Bold typography
Dynamic color composition
Stylized weapons and vehicles
Glamorous female figures
Exotic locations and espionage themes

Even when the films themselves were modest productions, Italian poster artists often created far more exciting and visually striking artwork than the original film advertising in other countries.

Because of this, Italian posters are often collected as graphic art pieces, not just movie memorabilia.
