Francja. Monnaie Obsidionale. 5 Sols 1708 Siège de Lille

This 1708 5 Sols is a prime artifact of the War of the Spanish Succession, specifically struck during the epic Siege of Lille. From August to December 1708, the powerful fortress city of Lille was surrounded by the Allied forces of the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy. Cut off from the royal mints of King Louis XIV, the city’s defender, Marshal Boufflers, was forced to create an emergency mint to pay his troops and sustain the local economy. Legend holds that these copper and bronze pieces were often struck using metal salvaged from melted-down cannons and bells within the besieged citadel, making each coin a tangible fragment of the fortifications themselves. The design of this siege piece is strictly utilitarian, reflecting the duress under which it was made. The obverse features a crowned circular shield of France superimposed over crossed scepters, a defiant symbol of royal authority even under siege. The reverse is dominated by the legend "V·S PRO DEFENSIONE VRBIS ET PATRIAE" (5 Sols for the Defense of the City and the Fatherland), encircling the date of 1708. Because these coins were produced in a temporary military workshop rather than a professional mint, they are characterized by crude strikes, irregular planchets, and varied metal compositions. This makes the NGC AU Details designation for this specimen particularly impressive; most siege coins saw immediate, heavy circulation or were lost in the rubble of war, making high-grade "About Uncirculated" examples exceptionally difficult to source. From a market perspective, Lille siege coinage is a highly specialized niche with strong demand from collectors of Napoleonic and early modern military history. While common, lower-grade examples often appear in European sales, a certified specimen in an NGC holder carries a significant premium for its guaranteed authenticity. Market values for the 5 Sols denomination in this grade typically range between $200 and $350, with prices climbing higher for pieces that exhibit clear legends and a well-centered strike. The "AU Details" status suggests that while the coin retains nearly all its original design depth, it may possess minor environmental aging or "adjustment marks" typical of emergency wartime production. For the serious numismatist, this 1708 issue is more than a coin; it is a survivor of one of the 18th century’s most significant military engagements.
