Escher became fascinated by the Möbius strip — a surface with only one side and one edge — after reading about topology and seeing physical models of it. In this work he depicts a band of red ants walking endlessly along the strip, making this paradoxical property vividly visible. It’s said that Escher used to make small paper Möbius strips himself before drawing them in order to better understand their three-dimensional structure.
